Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance to cover your damages.
The Problem
According to the Insurance Research Council:
- Approximately 1 in 8 drivers is uninsured
- Rates are even higher in some states
- Many drivers carry only state minimum coverage, which may not cover your costs
What UM/UIM Covers
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
- Hit-and-run accidents where the driver isn't identified
- Accidents caused by completely uninsured drivers
- Covers your medical bills and sometimes vehicle damage
Underinsured Motorist Coverage
- Accidents where the at-fault driver's coverage isn't enough
- Pays the gap between their coverage and your actual costs
Example Scenario
You're seriously injured by an at-fault driver with only $25,000 in coverage.
- Your medical bills: $75,000
- Their insurance pays: $25,000
- Gap: $50,000
With UM/UIM coverage, your policy helps cover that $50,000 gap.
Who Is Covered
- You as the policyholder
- Family members in your household
- Passengers in your vehicle
- You while a pedestrian or cyclist (in some states)
Is It Required?
UM/UIM requirements vary by state. Some states:
- Require UM/UIM coverage
- Require insurers to offer it
- Make it optional
Even where not required, we strongly recommend this coverage.
